ISTANBUL: An ex-student opened fire at his former high school on Tuesday in Turkey, where school shootings are rare, wounding 16 people, including students, before killing himself, officials said. Special security forces were deployed to the school in southeastern Turkey&#39;s Sanliurfa province, where students were evacuated, the local governor, Hasan Sildak, told reporters. Television footage showed ambulances standing by outside the school in the Siverek district as students fled the building in panic. Sildak identified the attacker as a former student at the school, born in 2007. &quot;He took his own life when cornered by police,&quot; the governor said. &quot;We have evacuated the school and will carry out a thorough investigation into this tragic incident,&quot; he added. Local media reported that most of the wounded were students.

The players arrived in Turkey via Oman and Kuala Lumpur, having left Australia, where they were competing in the Asian Cup. &quot;I am missing my family,&quot; one of them told AFP on Monday at Kuala Lumpur Airport. According to DHA, the players left Istanbul Airport under police escort and headed to a hotel in the city. They will return to Iran on Wednesday, the Turkish private news agency reported. Seven members of the delegation had sought sanctuary in Australia last week after they were branded &quot;traitors&quot; at home for refusing to sing the national anthem at their opening Women&#39;s Asian Cup game. Only two remain in Australia after the others changed their minds. Rights groups have accused Tehran of pressuring athletes abroad by threatening relatives with the seizure of property if they defect or make statements against the Islamic Republic. Iranian authorities had, in turn, accused Australia of pressuring the players to stay.

Eight police and a security agent were also wounded,&quot; he added. &lsquo;Simultaneous operations&rsquo;Yerlikaya said that &quot;simultaneous operations&quot; were staged on 108 addresses in 15 provinces, including at Yalova at 2:00 am (2300 GMT Sunday). &quot;During this operation, IS terrorists opened fire on our courageous police,&quot; he said. According to the minister, the six IS operatives killed were all Turkish, and five women and six children who were with them were all evacuated safely. An Istanbul prosecutor last week ordered the detention of 137 suspected IS members following information that the group planned attacks during the end-of-year holidays. Turkey has a 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria and is wary of cross-frontier infiltrations by militants. IS was recently accused of attacking Americans in Palmyra, killing two soldiers and an interpreter.&nbsp;

The Istanbul discussions are aimed at moving toward a verifiable framework to prevent further escalation and ensure stability along the Pakistan&ndash;Afghanistan border.&nbsp;Three-point agenda under reviewSources said the talks in Istanbul focused on a three-point agenda: establishing a joint monitoring and oversight mechanism to curb cross-border militant movement; ensuring respect for national sovereignty under existing laws and international obligations; and addressing trade matters, refugee repatriation, and the separation of bilateral issues from internal political pressures.&nbsp;Possibility of longer-term understandingOfficials confirmed that both sides also discussed the prospect of a longer-term political understanding.&nbsp;Pakistan&rsquo;s Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi had earlier described the Doha engagement as a &ldquo;positive marker.&rdquo;&nbsp;&ldquo;There has been no major full-scale terrorist attack emanating from Afghan soil in the last two to three days,&rdquo; he said on Friday. &ldquo;We would like the trend to continue in Istanbul and post-Istanbul.&rdquo;&nbsp;On the Afghan side, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated on X that Deputy Interior Minister Haji Najib is leading Kabul&rsquo;s delegation, noting that &ldquo;the remaining issues will be discussed at this meeting.&rdquo;&nbsp;Islamabad&rsquo;s core objectiveAndrabi reiterated that Pakistan&rsquo;s central aim is to halt attacks originating from Afghan territory, adding that the ceasefire &ldquo;by and large still stands.&rdquo;&nbsp;Officials in Islamabad said the decision to re-engage in dialogue was made at Kabul&rsquo;s request and through mutual understanding to reduce tensions, emphasizing that sustained engagement is important for regional stability.&nbsp;Background to the talksThe latest engagement follows a surge in militant incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including attacks in Central Kurram and Dera Ismail Khan, in which at least 28 Pakistani security personnel, including senior officers, were martyred. In response to the deteriorating situation, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced that Islamabad would dispatch a delegation to Kabul, citing what he described as &ldquo;unbearable&rdquo; security conditions. Shortly afterward, explosions were reported in Kabul, which Taliban officials linked to Pakistan, a claim Islamabad did not immediately address. On October 11, heavy clashes then broke out at several points along the 2,604-kilometre border. The Afghan side&rsquo;s 201st Khalid bin Walid Army Corps said its actions came in response to Pakistan&rsquo;s earlier strikes, while Pakistan also engaged multiple Afghan positions and temporarily closed the Spin Boldak crossing. A 48-hour temporary truce was put in place on October 15 and was subsequently extended through the Doha talks held last week with the facilitation of Qatar and T&uuml;rkiye. According to Qatar, both sides agreed to maintain an immediate ceasefire and continue follow-up engagements to support its implementation.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas are being held at the Red Sea resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh, based on a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump last month. &lsquo;There&rsquo;s a possibility&rsquo;: TrumpPresident Trump on Tuesday pledged US support for Gaza security guarantees and said he believes a deal is close to being completed for the remaining hostages, Reuters reported. Talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, &quot;I think there&#39;s a possibility that we could have peace in the Middle East&quot; beyond just Gaza.
