Pakistan to accelerate renewable energy push to address national power shortfall

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed that renewable energy projects be promoted to meet the country's energy shortfall.


PM Sharif chaired a meeting regarding reforms in the energy sector in Lahore on Saturday, said a statement shared on X by the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday.


Speaking at the meeting, the prime minister said that measures should be taken to provide facilities for industrial and domestic electricity consumers.

Sharif directed that renewable energy projects be promoted to meet the country's energy shortfall.


The prime minister also directed that significant reductions in line losses be achieved by improving the electricity transmission system.


Sharif also emphasized promoting the use of modern technology in the energy sector.

 

Electricity tariffs 

“A comprehensive strategy be formulated to stabilize electricity tariffs. Digital facilities be provided to ease bill payments for consumers,” the statement said.


“Strict measures to eliminate electricity theft be continued,” it added.


The prime minister said that uninterrupted energy supply be ensured to promote industrial development.


Sharif said providing facilities to domestic consumers was among the government's top priorities.


“Reforms in the energy sector will not be carried out without keeping in view the broader interests of the public and industry,” the statement said.


Recommendations regarding electricity consumption for domestic consumers and industry were presented to the prime minister during the meeting.


The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, and senior officers of relevant institutions.
