He announced the plan while addressing the opening session of the Breathe Pakistan International Climate Change Conference in Islamabad. He said the initiative would focus on applied and commercially viable climate research developed in collaboration with Italian academic institutions. Malik said discussions with Italian officials in recent months had laid the groundwork for joint research programs in which Pakistani and Italian students would work together under the supervision of leading international scholars, including Nobel laureates. Pakistan&rsquo;s large youth population, about two-thirds of the country, represents a major opportunity to drive innovation in climate solutions, Malik said. While students at top universities have strong ideas and technical knowledge, they often lack the resources and pathways to turn those ideas into practical outcomes, he added. Opportunity to work with renowned professors, Nobel laureatesReferring to recent discussions with Italian officials, Malik said Pakistani and Italian students would jointly conduct research projects under the initiative, with internationally renowned professors, including Nobel laureates, supervising the work. &ldquo;It was a rolling conversation in Italy that I had just a few months ago, and now we are putting together a framework,&rdquo; he said. The minister said Pakistan&rsquo;s young population possessed the imagination, scientific understanding and determination needed to develop climate solutions, stressing that the government was committed to providing them with resources, platforms and institutional support.&nbsp; Malik noted that about two-thirds of Pakistan&rsquo;s population was youth and lauded the quality of education provided by several universities across the country. &ldquo;Our young people have ideas, technology, science and passion. Most importantly, there are still stars in their eyes and they still believe the world can be changed,&rdquo; he said. He said students graduating from institutions including GIK, LUMS and other leading universities had strong ideas and innovative thinking, but often lacked opportunities and pathways to implement them. &ldquo;We have to give them that pathway,&rdquo; he added. The minister announced that the government would organize quarterly competitions to support students and young innovators working on climate-related technologies, applied science and sustainability solutions.&nbsp; Funding availableAccording to him, young researchers and entrepreneurs would receive funding to pursue ideas that could help address challenges related to water, environment, clean energy and climate resilience. &ldquo;It is their air. They are breathing; they will find the solution,&rdquo; he remarked while referring to the younger generation&rsquo;s ability to tackle environmental challenges. Encouraging experimentation and innovation, the minister said young people should be allowed to take risks without fear of failure.&nbsp; The minister said the government was also working on a &ldquo;Greenfield Pakistan Pitch&rdquo; initiative to connect innovative climate ideas with investment opportunities and commercial support. He said Pakistan&rsquo;s climate-related challenges could become the foundation for globally relevant solutions.&nbsp; &ldquo;The child who solves Pakistan&rsquo;s water problem can solve Africa&rsquo;s water problem too,&rdquo; he remarked, adding that billion-dollar ideas could emerge from Pakistani youth. Highlighting the unequal global impact of climate change, Malik said Pakistan contributed less than 1% to global carbon dioxide emissions despite being among the countries most severely affected by floods, environmental degradation and worsening air quality.&nbsp; Speaking about the impact of air pollution on life expectancy, he cited studies suggesting that polluted air could reduce average life expectancy by several years. &#39;Those suffering are not causing it&#39;The minister said around 10 countries were responsible for nearly 78% of global emissions, while communities in areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan continued to suffer the consequences despite contributing almost nothing to the problem. &ldquo;Those suffering are not causing it, and those causing it are not suffering,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp; Questioning the global response to climate change, Malik asked whether the issue was one of &ldquo;rights, justice or political will.&rdquo; The minister said climate change was not only a question of environmental policy but also one of imagination, responsibility and commitment toward future generations.

It is said to be one of Turkiye&rsquo;s most advanced long-range missile platforms to date. Alongside the missile, drone maker Baykar introduced three new products: the K2 kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle, Mizrak, and Sivrisinek loitering munitions, Anadolu Agency reported. The K2 is designed for swarm operations in contested environments and can carry more than 200 kilograms of payload, while Mizrak is said to have a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. Sivrisinek combines reconnaissance and strike capabilities for tactical missions. Baykar also displayed its existing platforms, including the Bayraktar TB2, TB3, Akinci, and Kizilelma, as well as the Kemankes mini-cruise missiles, according to the report. Kayaci Defense unveiled Cellat, a kamikaze unmanned surface vessel capable of speeds of nearly 50 knots and a range of 450 nautical miles, Anadolu Agency said. Meanwhile, Aselsan introduced Kilic, described as Turkiye&rsquo;s first kamikaze autonomous underwater vehicle, and Tufan, a kamikaze unmanned surface vehicle capable of swarm operations and strike missions, the agency reported. In the land systems segment, BMC unveiled the Pamir 4x4 personnel carrier, capable of speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour and a range of 600 kilometers, the report said. In the field of space technology, Spacrol introduced Sacstor, a satellite attitude simulator designed to replicate space-like conditions for CubeSats and other platforms. Separately, officials at the exhibition said Turkiye aims to rank among the world&rsquo;s top 10 defense and aerospace exporters as it expands capabilities in missiles, unmanned systems, and space technologies.

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani army cadet has secured a prestigious international military award at Australia&rsquo;s premier training institution, the military&#39;s media wing said on Wednesday. Cadet Sardar Arsam Abbas was awarded the title of &ldquo;Overall Best Foreign Military Cadet&rdquo; at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, during a graduation ceremony held on Tuesday in Canberra, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said. The honor is given to the highest-ranking international cadet based on overall performance across academic, military and leadership training. The parade was reviewed by Australia&rsquo;s Chief of Army, Lt. Gen. Simon Stuart, and attended by diplomatic officials, including Pakistan&rsquo;s high commissioner to Australia, as well as families of graduating cadets and members of the Australian Defense Force. Pakistan&rsquo;s military described the award as a reflection of the professionalism and standards of its junior officers. Pakistan and Australia maintain longstanding defense ties, including training exchanges. Since 2009, 46 Pakistani cadets have graduated from the Royal Military College, while several Pakistani officers have served on its faculty as platoon commanders. According to ISPR, this marks the 14th time a Pakistani cadet has received the distinction. Among previous recipients was Lt. Nasir Hussain Khalid Selhria, who was later killed during an operation in North Waziristan in 2020. His name is inscribed on a memorial at the college&rsquo;s parade ground.

ISLAMABAD: An average of one woman dies every hour in Afghanistan from preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications, according to the World Health Organization, raising alarm over a deepening maternal health crisis in the country. According to the report, Afghanistan&rsquo;s maternal mortality rate has climbed to 521 deaths per 100,000 live births, among the highest in the world. Health experts say the vast majority of these deaths could be avoided with timely medical care. Female doctors inside Afghanistan say a combination of restrictions and systemic challenges has pushed the health sector to the brink. They cite a shortage of female specialists, the closure of women-focused health centers, and limitations on medical graduates&rsquo; ability to pursue advanced training or sit for state licensing exams. &ldquo;These policies are directly affecting our capacity to provide care,&rdquo; said one female physician in Kabul, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons. &ldquo;Without trained female staff, many women cannot access treatment at all.&rdquo; Under current rules imposed by the Taliban, women face significant barriers in education and employment, including in the medical field. Female health workers say these restrictions have reduced both the number of practicing professionals and the pipeline of future doctors. In addition to staffing shortages, geographic and economic barriers are compounding the crisis. Many rural communities remain far from functioning health facilities, while high treatment costs and a lack of essential childbirth equipment further limit access to care. The World Health Organization has warned that if current trends continue, maternal and newborn deaths could rise further. The agency has called for urgent measures to restore access to health services, expand training opportunities, and ensure that women can both receive and provide medical care. Doctors on the ground echo those concerns, saying the situation could worsen rapidly without intervention. &ldquo;If these restrictions remain,&rdquo; another female doctor said, &ldquo;the health crisis will spread far beyond what we are seeing now.&rdquo;
