ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Egypt on Monday started a two-week-long bilateral counter-terrorism exercise conducted between their militaries, a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.&nbsp; Joint Exercise Thunder-II, which commenced on April 6 at the Special Operations School in Cherat, Pakistan, is a bilateral counter-terrorism exercise where troops from Pakistan&rsquo;s Special Services Group of and Egypt&rsquo;s Special Forces participate. &ldquo;The Commandant Special Operations School, Cherat, graced the opening ceremony as Chief Guest,&rdquo; the press release issued by ISPR said. According to the press release, the exercise was aimed at enhancing professional skills through joint training, while further strengthening the longstanding military-to-military relations between the two friendly countries. &ldquo;Participating troops will benefit from the exchange of mutual experiences and expertise, particularly in the conduct of counter-terrorism operations,&rdquo; ISPR added.

NEW DELHI: An Indian court has sentenced nine policemen to death for the torture and killing of a father and son in 2020 who were detained for allegedly breaching covid lockdown rules. The additional district judge in Madurai, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, found the officers guilty in the custodial deaths of trader Jeyaraj, 59, and his son Benniks, 31, according to a statement by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday. &quot;The court upheld that the case is a clear instance of abuse of authority and falls in the rarest of the rare cases,&quot; it said following sentencing on Monday in a case that triggered outrage over police brutality. The two men were picked up by the officers from a police station and allegedly subjected to brutal torture. Media reports said the victims, who ran a mobile shop, were arrested for allegedly keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours during a lockdown as the Covid-19 pandemic raged across the country. Widespread outrage over the killings pushed the Tamil Nadu government to transfer the case to the CBI, which filed charges against nine officers within 90 days. During the trial, the CBI examined more than 50 witnesses and argued that the killings had &quot;shaken public conscience&quot;, warranting the severest punishment. All nine accused were convicted of murder and destroying evidence. India carries out executions by hanging, though they remain rare. The last executions in India were in March 2020, when four men convicted of the 2012 gang rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus were hanged, in a case that sparked huge nationwide protests.

A major part of the criticism concerns police inaction.&nbsp; According to both reports, IRC member Baburaj Bhagavathy said many complaints were either never filed or did not lead to meaningful police action even when submitted.&nbsp; Bhagavaty said this was especially troubling because the Supreme Court has directed authorities to take suo motu cognizance of hate speech, yet many such cases in Kerala allegedly saw no action.&nbsp;The complainants have been facing difficulties themselves, reportedly.&nbsp; Raihanath Kappan, the wife of Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested while attempting to cover the Hathras rape case in 2020, said multiple complaints she filed over alleged hate propaganda on YouTube were not registered.&nbsp; Another case involved writer KR Indira, whose past anti-Muslim remarks had drawn complaints, but where follow-p action was allegedly weak. Maktoob also said activist Usman Kattappana, who criticised those remarks, was himself booked by police.&nbsp; With Kerala already in election mode ahead of April 9 polling, Bhagavathy warned that Islamophobic campaigns could see a spike during the campaign period.&nbsp;That has raised fresh concerns about communal rhetoric and weak enforcement in a state often seen as more socially progressive than much of India.&nbsp;

GAZA CITY: A Gaza hospital said clashes and Israeli airstrikes killed at least 10 people on Monday near a school sheltering displaced people in the center of the Palestinian territory. The incident is the latest to shake a fragile US-backed ceasefire that has been in place since October 10 and has largely halted the war between Israel and Hamas. &quot;At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured, including six in critical condition, by Israeli shelling and clashes east of Al-Maghazi camp&quot; in the center of the territory, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital said in a statement. A Palestinian witness told AFP that the violence began with clashes between gunmen from an anti-Hamas militia, allegedly backed by Israel, and some residents in the school who were backed by Hamas fighters. The anti-Hamas gunmen had come to arrest some residents, the witness said, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons. &quot;Clashes broke out when residents and Hamas members tried to confront the (anti-Hamas) militiamen,&quot; he said. &quot;Shortly after, Israeli forces bombed the area near the school and also opened heavy fire,&quot; he said. The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports. It remains unclear how many of the victims were killed by airstrikes and how many died in the clashes. Despite the technological advancements since the Apollo era, NASA still relies on the eyesight of its astronauts to learn more about the Moon. &quot;The human eye is basically the best camera that could ever or will ever exist,&quot; Kelsey Young, the lead scientist for the Artemis II mission, told AFP. &quot;The number of receptors in the human eye far outweighs what a camera is able to do.&quot; And while the Orion crew will still be at a substantial distance from the Moon, their flyby is key to preparing for a later crewed mission to the planet&#39;s surface itself. &quot;We&#39;re going to learn an awful lot about the spacecraft,&quot; NASA administrator Jared Isaacman told CNN on Sunday. The information will be &quot;pretty paramount to set up for subsequent missions like Artemis III in 2027 and, of course, the lunar landing itself on Artemis IV in 2028,&quot; he added.

NASA’s Artemis II crew becomes the farthest-traveling humans from Earth, surpassing Apollo 13 as they conduct a historic flyby of the Moon and observe previously unseen lunar regions.

VIENNA:&nbsp;The chief of the UN nuclear watchdog on Monday warned that attacks near Iran&#39;s Bushehr atomic power plant &quot;pose a very real danger to nuclear safety and must stop&quot;. The facility, located in the south of Iran and equipped with a 1,000-megawatt reactor, has been targeted four times since the US-Israeli war on Iran began. The latest strike was reported by Iranian state media on Saturday. Strikes near the operating plant &quot;could cause a severe radiological accident with harmful consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond,&quot; said Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on X. Russia, whose specialists help operate the plant, said the strikes risked a &quot;radiological disaster more devastating than Chernobyl&quot;. &quot;We once again urgently call for an immediate cessation of hostilities,&quot; the Russian foreign ministry said. The IAEA analysed satellite imagery of the site, confirming the impact of the latest strike, which did not damage the power plant. Grossi added that one strike hit just 75 metres (246 feet) from the plant perimeter. &quot;A nuclear facility and surrounding areas should never be struck,&quot; he said. Bushehr, built with help from Russia, is Iran&#39;s only operational nuclear power reactor, according to the IAEA. Russian state media reported that 198 workers at the plant were evacuated just after the latest strike, with about 100 Russian staff remaining at the site.&nbsp;
