NEW YORK: A UN official lamented on Monday that the world does not seem to care about a cycle of atrocities in Sudan as its civil war nears the three-year mark. The conflict has killed tens of thousands, displaced more than 11 million people, and created what the UN describes as the world&#39;s largest displacement and hunger crises. The conflict pits rival generals leading the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). &quot;We really are on repeat in the Sudan. Repeats of sexual violence, repeated displacements, repeated death,&quot; the UN&#39;s resident coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, told a press conference via video. &quot;We&#39;re in the UN speaking openly about, about, you know, the atrocities, the repeat of the atrocities. The question is, why isn&#39;t the world outraged enough to do something about it?&quot; she said. Brown cited the case of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, which was the army&#39;s last stronghold in western Darfur before the RSF pushed it out last October. She said the UN estimates that at least 6,000 people died in the first three days of that assault but does not know the true number of fatalities, disappearances and arrests. Brown said she is now worried about the town of Dilling in South Kordofan state, which she said is coming under daily attack by the RSF. UN convoys cannot get in, she added. A UN appeal to raise $2.9 billion for Sudan this year is only 16% covered as international aid contributions from member countries decline, Brown said.

KHARTOUM: A large explosion was heard Friday in the military-controlled Sudanese capital Khartoum, an AFP journalist and witnesses said, with authorities blaming a landmine left behind from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/sudan-hospital-attack-toll-rises-to-70-who" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">war</a>. Khartoum has seen relative calm since the army, which has been locked in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (<a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/uk-slaps-sanctions-on-sudan-rsf-paramilitary-deputy-other-commanders" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">RSF</a>) since April 2023, regained control of the capital last year. An AFP journalist in Omdurman, Khartoum&#39;s twin city just across the Nile, reported hearing one blast from the direction of central Khartoum. A witness in the city center also described a &quot;single, loud explosion&quot; but said there were no immediate signs of fire or rising smoke. Other residents across the capital confirmed hearing the blast. Sudanese police said in a statement the explosion occurred in the Burri neighborhood in eastern Khartoum and was caused by a landmine, a remnant of the war, which detonated after &quot;some residents set fire to waste&quot; in the area. Police added no casualties or material damage were recorded. Burri lies near several strategic and military sites, including the military&#39;s General Command headquarters and Khartoum International Airport. The UN has previously warned that Khartoum is &quot;heavily contaminated by unexploded ordnance&quot;, reporting that landmines have been found across Khartoum. Many of the unexploded devices were left behind by RSF fighters who took control of the city in the early days of the war. After the army recaptured the capital last March, the RSF carried out drone strikes targeting military bases and civilian infrastructure in the capital. But none have been reported in recent months, and the city has regained a sense of normality, with 1.7 million <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/seven-killed-in-drone-strike-on-sudan-hospital-medical-source" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">displaced people</a> returning. Outside Khartoum, drone attacks by both the army and the RSF have continued to disrupt daily life, with some strikes killing dozens at once. GENEVA: A strike on a hospital in Sudan killed 64 people and wounded 89 others, the World Health Organization said Saturday, with 13 children counted among the dead. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the attack on Friday hit El-Daein Teaching Hospital in the state capital of East Darfur, adding that &quot;enough blood has been spilled&quot; and it was time to stop the nearly three-year conflict ravaging Sudan. The hospital &quot;was struck, killing at least 64 people, including 13 children, two female nurses, one male doctor, and multiple patients,&quot; he announced on X. Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers reported that the hospital was hit by an army drone strike. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces dominate the vast Darfur region in western Sudan, while Sudan&#39;s army is in control of the east, center and north. Tedros said eight health staff were among the wounded in Friday&#39;s attack, which damaged the hospital&#39;s paediatric, maternity, and emergency departments. The hospital is now non-functional &quot;due to the extensive damage,&quot; he said, which resulted in a &quot;critical interruption of essential medical services.&quot; Tedros said the WHO was supporting local health partners to help fill urgent gaps by scaling up capacity at other health facilities, including by increasing capacity to treat the injured, and deploying trauma care supplies and essential medicines. &#39;Devastating human toll&#39;&nbsp;RSF-controlled El-Daein has been regularly attacked by the Sudanese army, which is trying to push the paramilitaries back towards its Darfur strongholds and away from Sudan&#39;s central corridor. Its most recent strike on the city&#39;s market earlier this month set fire to oil barrels that burned for hours. The WHO&#39;s Surveillance System for Attacks on Health Care (SSA) counts and verifies such attacks, but it does not attribute blame as it is not an investigative agency. The United Nations&#39; humanitarian office in Sudan said it was &quot;appalled by the attack.&quot; To the repeated condemnation of the UN, hospitals have been a regular target throughout the war, which erupted in April 2023. As a result of Friday&#39;s tragedy, the total number of people killed in attacks on health care in the conflict has now passed 2,000. The WHO&#39;s SSA site showed 2,036 people have now been killed in 213 such attacks. &quot;Beyond the devastating human toll, attacks on health care have immediate and long-term consequences for communities already in desperate need of both emergency and routine medical services,&quot; said Tedros. &quot;Health care should never be a target. Peace is the best medicine,&quot; he said. The SSA figures show attacks on health care in Sudan are growing deadlier by the year. In 2023, 64 attacks caused 38 deaths, and the following year, 72 attacks led to 200 deaths. In 2025, 65 attacks caused 1,620 deaths, 82% of reported deaths from attacks on health care worldwide. &#39;Enough suffering&#39;The WHO&#39;s SSA said Friday&#39;s strike involved &quot;violence with heavy weapons&quot; and affected not just the hospital, staff and patients but also supplies and storage. Near-daily drone strikes are now a hallmark of Sudan&#39;s brutal war, killing dozens at a time, mostly in the southern Kordofan region. GENEVA: Killings of civilians in Sudan&#39;s war more than doubled in 2025 compared with the previous year, the United Nations rights chief said Thursday, warning that thousands more dead are unidentified or remain missing. Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has killed tens of thousands, displaced 11 million people and triggered one of the world&#39;s worst humanitarian crises. &quot;This war is ugly. It&#39;s bloody, and it&#39;s senseless,&quot; Volker Turk told the UN Human Rights Council, blaming both sides, which have so far rejected any humanitarian truce. He also blamed foreign sponsors funding what he called a &quot;high-tech&quot; conflict. &quot;In 2025, my office&#39;s documentation points to an over two-and-a-half times increase in killings of civilians compared with the previous year. Many thousands are still missing or unidentified,&quot; Turk said. There have been no official figures on the conflict&#39;s overall death toll. Turk condemned what he called the &quot;heinous and ruthless&quot; brutalities committed, including sexual violence, summary executions and arbitrary detentions. He highlighted the &quot;carnage&quot; inflicted by the RSF in an April attack on the Zamzam displacement camp and again in October in El‑Fasher, then the regular army&#39;s last foothold in western Darfur. Rape, gang rape, sexual torture, and slavery have also surged, Turk said, with more than 500 victims documented in 2025. &quot;The bodies of Sudanese women and girls have been weaponized to terrorize communities.&quot; In a statement, the foreign ministers of the Sudan core group at the UN Human Rights Council said the RSF-led violence in El-Fasher &quot;constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity and bears the hallmarks of genocide.&quot; Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Britain said they would form a coalition &quot;to prevent further atrocities in Sudan and support the Sudanese people in laying the foundations for future justice.&quot; &#39;Madness&#39; Since the fall of El-Fasher, the fighting has moved deeper into neighboring Kordofan, where drone strikes have killed dozens at a time. Since January, drone attacks in the southern Kordofan region and beyond have &quot;killed or injured nearly 600 civilians,&quot; Turk said, including in attacks on humanitarian aid convoys. The UN&#39;s resident and humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, Denise Brown, said that access to the cities of Kadugli and Dilling in South Kordofan &mdash; long cut off by an RSF siege until the army recently lifted it &mdash; had been effectively impossible. &quot;We were not able to get supplies in. We had to remove our staff for their own safety,&quot; she said Thursday, after stepping off the first UN flight to Khartoum since the war began. The same assessment said Dilling in South Kordofan is likely facing famine conditions. Turk said the army and the RSF continued to use &quot;explosive weapons in densely populated areas, often without warning &mdash; showing utter disregard for human life.&quot; He highlighted the &quot;increased use of advanced long-range drones,&quot; which has &quot;expanded harm to civilians in areas far from the front lines that were previously peaceful.&quot; Turk also voiced concern over &quot;the growing militarization of society&quot;, including the recruitment of children into the fighting. Several countries have been accused of involvement in the conflict. The United Arab Emirates has been accused of arming the RSF &mdash; allegations it denies. Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have backed army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Turk urged &quot;diplomatic and political pressure&quot; for a humanitarian truce that leads to a permanent ceasefire. Efforts to secure a ceasefire have repeatedly collapsed. Burhan vowed this week to fight &quot;until the end&quot; and said he plans to build a &quot;smart army&quot; investing in technology and research. In January, the army was studying a new ceasefire proposal from the United States and Saudi Arabia. Talks mediated by the United States, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have stalled for months, with Burhan accusing mediators of favoring the UAE.

This has pushed the region to one of the highest levels of food insecurity globally.Across 68 countries where WFP operates, 318 million people are projected to experience acute food insecurity in 2025, down from 343 million in 2024. However, this decrease reflects gaps in data from several countries, rather than a real reduction in hunger levels.In total, 41.1 million people in 51 countries are expected to face emergency or worse levels of acute food insecurity in 2025, including 38.7 million people in emergency conditions based on the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC/CH) data, and 2.4 million people in severe conditions according to the CARI system. The report warned that these populations needed immediate assistance to prevent widespread malnutrition and death.Among those facing the most extreme hunger, Gaza is one of the hardest-hit areas. ISLAMABAD: The inaugural Inter-Parliamentary Speakers&rsquo; Conference (ISC) opened in Islamabad on Tuesday, bringing together parliamentary representatives from more than 40 countries to discuss peace, security and sustainable development.&nbsp;The two-day forum aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among global parliamentary leaders on shared economic, political and security challenges.&nbsp;Founding Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, opening the session, emphasized that peace, security and development are inseparable pillars of progress. &ldquo;Without peace, nations cannot build. Another shows him standing among fighters celebrating near dozens of bodies and burnt vehicles.&nbsp;The RSF released footage appearing to show Abu Lulu behind bars in what they claimed to be a North Darfur prison.&nbsp;It pledged to ensure &quot;military discipline during wartime,&quot; and promised a fair trial for those detained.&nbsp;Since El-Fasher&#39;s fall, videos circulating online have purportedly shown men in RSF uniforms carrying out summary executions around the city, which has been cut off from all communications.&nbsp;Emtithal Mahmoud, a US-based Sudanese poet from El-Fasher, told AFP she recognized her cousin, Nadifa, in a video shared by RSF accounts, lying dead on the ground.&nbsp;The UN said the death toll could reach the hundreds, while army allies have accused the RSF of killing over 2,000 civilians.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#39;Horror is continuing&#39;On Friday, the United Nations voiced alarm at emerging details of executions, gang rapes and abductions in El-Fasher.&nbsp;&quot;We have received horrendous accounts of summary executions, mass killings, rapes, attacks against humanitarian workers, looting, abductions and forced displacement,&quot; said UN rights office spokesperson Seif Magango.&nbsp;Magango called for &quot;independent, prompt, transparent and thorough investigations&quot; into all alleged breaches of international law.&nbsp;The World Health Organization, meanwhile, said it had verified that at least 460 patients and others were killed on Tuesday in attacks on the Saudi Maternity Hospital &mdash; one of the last still functioning in El-Fasher.&nbsp;On Thursday, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher told the Security Council that &quot;the horror is continuing&quot; in El-Fasher, and questioned the RSF&#39;s commitment to investigating violations amid the &quot;appalling news&quot; from North Darfur.&nbsp;RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo had earlier vowed accountability for &quot;anyone who has made a mistake&quot;, while an RSF-led coalition maintained many incriminating videos were &quot;fabricated&quot; by the army.&nbsp;Satellite imagery analyzed by Yale&#39;s Humanitarian Research Lab showed clusters in the city &quot;consistent with adult human bodies,&quot; and discoloration that may indicate &quot;pools of blood,&quot; its director told AFP.&nbsp;Sudanese analyst Kholood Khair said she was skeptical that the purported arrests would bring an end to the violence.&nbsp;&quot;We expect these atrocities to continue, particularly against non-Arab groups,&quot; she told AFP, citing communities such as the Zaghawa, Fur, Berti and Masalit in Darfur.&nbsp;In 2023, the RSF &mdash; descended from the Janjaweed Arab militias accused of genocide in Darfur two decades ago &mdash; was blamed for massacres against the Masalit tribe in West Darfur capital El-Geneina, killing up to 15,000 people.&nbsp;&quot;Overall, these patterns reflect a disturbing repetition of ethnic tensions from 20 years ago, now compounded by disputes over resource control and political power in the country,&quot; Khair said.&nbsp;More than 62,000 people have fled El-Fasher between Sunday and Wednesday, according to the UN&#39;s migration agency, while the fate of tens of thousands of civilians still trapped in the city remains unknown.&nbsp;Bloodshed in KordofanFletcher warned that the bloodshed was spreading beyond Darfur, with atrocities reported in the neighboring Kordofan region.&nbsp;According to UN figures, between Sunday and Wednesday, more than 35,000 people fled five localities in North Kordofan state, including Bara, which lies north of state capital El-Obeid on a key route to Darfur and which was overrun by paramilitaries on Saturday.&nbsp;Martha Pobee, the assistant UN secretary-general for Africa, highlighted &quot;reports of large-scale atrocities perpetrated&quot; by the RSF in Bara, including &quot;ethnically motivated&quot; reprisals.&nbsp;At least 50 civilians were killed there in recent days, both in fighting and executions, including five Red Crescent volunteers, according to the UN.&nbsp;Kordofan is &quot;clearly going to be the next area of military escalation&quot;, analyst Khair said.&nbsp;The RSF on Thursday accused the army of launching a drone attack on a school in eastern North Kordofan, claiming dozens of students and teachers were killed or injured &mdash; an allegation the army denied.&nbsp;AFP could not independently verify the attack.&nbsp;Both the army and the RSF have faced war crimes accusations over the course of the conflict.&nbsp;According to UN reports, the RSF has received weapons and drones from the UAE. Abu Dhabi has denied giving any support to the paramilitary group.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the army has drawn on support from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey.&nbsp;The US has previously determined that the RSF committed genocide in Darfur.&nbsp;El-Fasher&#39;s fall to the RSF gave it full control over all five state capitals in Darfur, effectively splitting Sudan along an east-west axis. The paramilitaries have established a self-declared rival government in Darfur.&nbsp;The army holds Sudan&#39;s north, east, and center.

EL-FASHER: A drone strike by Sudan&#39;s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed eight people in a maternity ward in the besieged city of El-Fasher, a medical source told AFP on Wednesday. The RSF is currently waging its fiercest assault ever on El-Fasher in an attempt to wrest control of the city away from their rivals, the regular army. Since April 2023, the war between the two forces has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions and pushed nearly 25 million people into acute hunger. Activists say El-Fasher, the last state capital in the vast western Darfur region to elude the paramilitary&#39;s grasp, has become &quot;an open-air morgue&quot; for starved civilians.&nbsp;Tuesday&#39;s deadly strike on El-Fasher Hospital also injured seven people and &quot;damaged buildings and equipment&quot;, the health worker said on condition of anonymity out of fear for their safety. The hospital is one of the last functioning health facilities in the city, with most repeatedly bombed and forced to shut. Nearly 80 percent of households in need of medical care in El-Fasher are unable to access it, according to the United Nations. Exhausted medical teams are already scrambling to treat the injured from the daily attacks on the city. Doctors, using satellite internet connections to circumvent a communications blackout, say they have taken to using bits of mosquito netting as a substitute for gauze. Nearly 18 months into the RSF&#39;s siege, the city -- home to 400,000 trapped civilians -- has run out of nearly everything.
