ISLAMABAD: The Afghan Taliban are &ldquo;not ready&rdquo; to fully accept Pakistan&rsquo;s &ldquo;logical and reasoned&rdquo; demands in the ongoing Istanbul talks, resulting in an impasse between the two sides, security sources told Pakistan TV Digital early Tuesday.&nbsp;The dialogue is taking place amid a surge in militant attacks in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including recent incidents in Central Kurram and Dera Ismail Khan, where at least 28 Pakistani security personnel, among them senior officers, were martyred.&nbsp;The Istanbul round is part of a broader diplomatic effort led by Qatar and T&uuml;rkiye to sustain the ceasefire and ease tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The initiative follows a temporary 48-hour truce announced on Oct. 15 and later extended during the Doha discussions.&nbsp;A security official familiar with the talks said the third day of negotiations had &ldquo;also suffered from difficulties.&rdquo;&nbsp;&ldquo;The Afghan Taliban delegation has acknowledged that Pakistan&rsquo;s demands are reasonable. Even the host countries agree these demands are legitimate,&rdquo; the official said. &ldquo;However, the Afghan side is not ready to fully accept them.&rdquo;&nbsp;The official said that the delay stemmed from instructions coming directly from Kabul.&nbsp;&ldquo;The delegation repeatedly consults Kabul and is proceeding strictly according to their directives. It would be fair to say they are being controlled from Kabul,&rdquo; the official added.&nbsp;The source further said that resistance to progress may be coming from factions within the Afghan power structure.&nbsp;&ldquo;There has been no encouraging response so far. Some elements in Kabul appear to be working on another agenda,&rdquo; the official said.&nbsp;According to the source, both T&uuml;rkiye and Qatar have conveyed to the Afghan side that accepting the negotiated points would be in the interest of all parties involved.&nbsp;&ldquo;Pakistan&rsquo;s position remains logical, strong, and peaceful,&rdquo; the official concluded.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&rsquo;s Foreign Office has said the group in power in Kabul does not enjoy any constitutional legitimacy, distancing Islamabad from the Taliban&rsquo;s self-declared status as an interim government. Addressing the weekly media briefing on Friday, the spokesperson said: &ldquo;There is no constitution. There is no legal framework but we are working with it. We have an ambassador there. But at the same time, we hope that there will be progress in terms of proper constitutional system of government taking root, truly representative of the Afghan people, taking root in Kabul.&rdquo; The remarks mark a shift in how Pakistan viewed Afghanistan, as foreign office uses regime instead of interim government to refer to the Taliban. The spokesperson said Pakistan continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with Kabul and that Afghanistan&rsquo;s political future must ultimately be decided by its own people.&nbsp; He said Islamabad seeks stability through dialogue and non-interference, but a legitimate, representative system must emerge in Afghanistan. At the same briefing, the Foreign Office warned about what it called the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. &ldquo;Belying fast the expectations and hopes of the regional countries, [Afghanistan] has become a central breeding ground for global terrorism.&rdquo; Referring to Pakistan&rsquo;s defensive actions along the border, the spokesperson said the country could not afford to &ldquo;wait for a big disaster happening at the global scale before we take remedial action.&rdquo; He added that Pakistan had long been drawing attention to the &ldquo;gradual sinking in of Afghanistan&rdquo; &mdash; both in terms of its failure to meet counterterrorism commitments and the growing toll such instability was taking on Pakistan&rsquo;s own security. &ldquo;But this fire will spread,&rdquo; the spokesperson cautioned. &ldquo;This has to be stopped.&rdquo; The comments came amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where Islamabad said it carried out &ldquo;targeted and precise defensive responses&rdquo; following what it described as unprovoked cross-border assaults by Taliban forces and affiliated militant groups.

Islamabad warned of Afghanistan’s worsening stability, calling it a breeding ground for global terrorism. Pakistan urged the establishment of a representative government in Kabul amid rising cross-border tensions and militant threats to regional stability.


Pakistan says Taliban government lacks constitutional legitimacy

ISLAMABAD: Abu Dhabi carrier Etihad said Friday it is launching flights to Kabul, making it the latest airline to offer direct routes to the Afghan capital. Etihad, which announced a record $476 million profit in 2024, said the new service responded to &ldquo;growing demand&rdquo; for travel between the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan and that the three weekly flights starting in December would support &ldquo;trade, travel, and community ties.&rdquo; &ldquo;The UAE hosts one of the largest Afghan communities in the Gulf, with around 300,000 Afghans living and working in the country, according to the Afghan Business Council,&rdquo; the airline said in a statement. &ldquo;The new flights will further strengthen these economic and social ties while enhancing connectivity through Abu Dhabi.&rdquo; Other international carriers flying direct to Kabul include Turkish Airlines and FlyDubai. India reopens embassy&nbsp;Even though the Taliban are largely isolated from the West, due to their restrictions on women and girls, they have successfully established bilateral relations with regional powers. In July, Russia became the first country to recognize them as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. And, on Friday, India said it was upgrading its technical mission in Kabul to a full embassy.

Abu Dhabi carrier Etihad launches direct flights to Kabul

KABUL: Two powerful explosions shook central Kabul on Thursday evening, according to local witnesses and journalists.&nbsp;A loud blast was reported near Abdul Haq Square in the Afghan capital, Pakistan TV Digital&rsquo;s Zahra said, prompting authorities to cordon off the area and restrict public access.&nbsp;Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that an explosion had occurred and said an investigation is underway, adding that no casualties or damage had been reported so far.&nbsp;Local media reports suggest the alleged target was Noor Wali Mehsud, the leader of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).&nbsp;According to Pakistan TV Digital&rsquo;s sources, a Land Cruiser was the intended target of the attack. Following the incident, TTP released audio messages attributed to Mehsud, claiming he had survived the attack.&nbsp;However, sources suggest that the prompt denial and audio release by the TTP further indicate that Mehsud was traveling openly through Kabul at the time of the explosions.&nbsp;Witnesses, including Reuters and AFP correspondents, said they heard at least two blasts around 9:50 p.m. local time (1720 GMT). Roads leading to the affected area have been sealed off as officials continue their investigation.
