BEIRUT: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for negotiations with Israel on Monday, after US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire in Gaza. In October 2023, Iran-backed Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israel in support of Hamas in the Gaza war. Months of hostilities escalated into all-out war in September 2024, before a ceasefire was agreed two months later. Israel has continued to strike Lebanon, saying it is hitting Hezbollah targets, but according to the United Nations over 100 civilians have been killed since the truce. &quot;The Lebanese state has previously negotiated with Israel under American and United Nations auspices, resulting in an agreement to demarcate the maritime border... so what prevents the same thing from happening again to find solutions to the outstanding issues,&quot; Aoun said according to a presidency statement. &quot;Today, the general atmosphere is one of compromise, and it is necessary to negotiate,&quot; he added, specifying that &quot;the form of this negotiation will be determined in due time&quot;. The US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect on Friday. There are no formal ties between Israel and Lebanon. &quot;We cannot be outside the current path in the region, which is the path of crisis resolution,&quot; Aoun said, stating it was &quot;no longer possible to tolerate more war, destruction, killing, and displacement&quot;. &#39;Bloody messages&#39; The United States began efforts to help demarcate the land border between Lebanon and Israel in 2023, after sponsoring an agreement on the maritime border between the two countries in 2022. However, the violence between Hezbollah and Israel froze those efforts. The current demarcation line between the two countries, drawn by the United Nations in 2000, includes 13 disputed points. Israel also kept its troops deployed in five border points it considered strategic after its war with Hezbollah. In a speech to the United Nations in September, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said &quot;peace between Israel and Lebanon is possible&quot;, calling on Beirut to &quot;begin direct negotiations&quot; with his country. Under US and Israeli pressure, Lebanon&#39;s government is seeking to disarm Hezbollah, and the Lebanese army has drawn up a plan to do so beginning in the country&#39;s south. Aoun said &quot;Israel continues to send military and bloody messages to pressure us&quot;, hoping to reach a time now when &quot;Israel commits to halting military operations against Lebanon and the negotiating process begins&quot;.

TEL AVIV: US President Donald Trump has said that several Middle Eastern nations were interested in joining the Abraham Accords &ldquo;Those who have joined the accords so far have done unbelievably well&rdquo;, trump said a speech to the Israeli Knesset on Monday. &nbsp; He praised the Abraham Accords as exceeding expectations, with continued interest from additional countries, though he did not name them, only hinting &ldquo;manty of these countries will be in Egypt&rdquo;. He also criticized former US presidents Obama and Biden for inaction while praising his own administration&rsquo;s successes in strengthening ties between Israel and Arab nations. He spoke of transforming the land into a thriving region and declared the potential era of peace for the Middle East. Trump calls for Iran denuclearization He warned that Iran was two months away from acquiring nuclear weapons, justifying the June 2025 strikes on Iranian nuclear sites by US B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. Trump said he was aiming for a peace deal with Iran. &ldquo;They got it from one side, from the other, and you know it would be great if we could make a peace deal with them,&rdquo; he told Israel&rsquo;s parliament. &ldquo;Would you be happy with that? NAIROBI: Around 300,000 South Sudanese have fled the country in 2025 alone, largely due to escalating conflict, the UN Commission on Human Rights said on Monday. South Sudan has been beset by political instability and ethnic violence since it gained independence from Sudan in 2011. A fragile power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and his first vice-president Riek Machar, suspended last month, has been unravelling for months in the world&#39;s youngest country. &quot;Armed clashes are occurring on a scale not seen since a cessation of hostilities was signed in 2017, with civilians bearing the brunt of human rights violations and displacements,&quot; the United Nations said in a statement. &quot;Women remain disproportionately affected, bearing the greatest burdens and risks of forcible displacement,&quot; the statement continued. The Commission&#39;s chairman, Yasmin Sooka, blamed the crisis on the &quot;deliberate choices&quot; of South Sudanese leaders, saying they have &quot;put their interests above those of their people&quot;.

ISLAMABAD: Law enforcement agencies dispersed violent protesters in Muridke on Monday, resulting in casualties on both sides after street protests by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) activists. According to law enforcement agency sources, authorities launched an operation to break up the unruly protest but faced resistance from the TLP members. The protesters pelted policemen with stones, attacked officers with spiked batons, and hurled petrol bombs. Authorities said the situation worsened quickly when the unruly protesters randomly opened fire on law enforcement officials and civilians in the area. Security forces were compelled to take limited defensive action to protect themselves and restore order. The confrontation resulted in significant casualties before the protest was brought under control. One Punjab police Station House Officer (SHO) was martyred, 48 were injured, and 17 suffered gunshot wounds. Authorities report that three TLP protesters were killed in the clashes, along with one bystander, while eight civilians were injured. The unruly protesters also set fire to 40 government and private vehicles before they were dispersed. After the dispersal, law enforcement agencies arrested several people involved in the violence. A search operation is ongoing as authorities seek to apprehend more suspects and keep the area secure.

Wingtech told the exchange that the decision &ldquo;temporarily restricts&quot; its control over Nexperia. ISLAMABAD: Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deepened following a surge in cross-border terrorist attacks and retaliatory strikes by Pakistani forces, as Islamabad accuses Kabul of allowing banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists to operate freely from Afghan soil.&nbsp;Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, currently on a week-long visit to India has denied the presence of the TTP in Afghanistan. His remarks came just days after TTP terrorists ambushed a Pakistani military convoy in the northwestern Orakzai&nbsp;District, killing 11 soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel and a major.&nbsp;Soon after, the TTP launched coordinated cross-border assaults on Pakistani military posts, exposing what security analysts describe as a growing nexus between the Afghan Taliban and the TTP.&nbsp;In response, Pakistani forces carried out precision strikes targeting TTP and Daesh hideouts inside Afghanistan, reportedly eliminating more than 200 terrorists.&nbsp;Pakistan&rsquo;s consistent goodwill toward KabulPakistan has long supported the Taliban-led government in Kabul. Islamabad was one of the few countries to keep its embassy open after the Taliban&rsquo;s takeover in August 2021 and has consistently advocated for unfreezing Afghanistan&rsquo;s $9 billion in foreign assets.&nbsp;Through regional forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Pakistan repeatedly urged the international community to extend humanitarian and economic support to Afghanistan.&nbsp;Islamabad&rsquo;s approach has long been guided by the belief that a stable and friendly government in Kabul is essential for regional peace and the security of Pakistan&rsquo;s western borders.&nbsp;In this spirit, Pakistan even extended an invitation to Afghanistan to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), envisioning trilateral cooperation with China to bring investment, energy connectivity, and infrastructure development to the war-torn country.&nbsp;Goodwill met with denial and hostilityHowever, officials and observers say this goodwill has largely been met with mistrust and denial from the Afghan side.&nbsp;&ldquo;All Pakistan expected in return was for the Afghan Taliban to take concrete action against TTP terrorists using Afghan territory to attack Pakistan,&rdquo; said retired Air Commodore Khalid Chishti. &ldquo;But instead of cooperation, we are witnessing denial, deflection, and, increasingly, alignment with India.&rdquo;&nbsp;Chishti said the Afghan Taliban&rsquo;s outright denial of TTP&#39;s presence &ldquo;amounts to making fun of themselves.&rdquo;&nbsp;&ldquo;The whole world knows the TTP is operating from Afghanistan,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Either the Taliban are part of it or they are helpless. When they claim control over all of Afghanistan yet deny cross-border attacks, it shows either a lack of capacity or will.&rdquo;&nbsp;He added that Afghan Foreign Minister Muttaqi &ldquo;spent much of his youth in Pakistan and served as the Taliban&rsquo;s information minister during their first regime from 1996 to 2001,&rdquo; describing him as &ldquo;someone for whom Pakistan was like a second home.&rdquo;&nbsp;&ldquo;This is the same individual once listed as a terrorist&mdash;whom India accused of hijacking its plane&mdash;but now welcomed in New Delhi simply because he shares an anti-Pakistan stance,&rdquo; Chishti noted.&nbsp;India&rsquo;s expanding footprint in AfghanistanThe retired air commodore said India has long used Afghanistan as a strategic pressure point against Pakistan, pouring billions into infrastructure, education, and development projects to gain political leverage.&nbsp;&ldquo;India cannot compete with Pakistan on the eastern border,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;So, it funds proxies across the western border&mdash;buying loyalty, outsourcing terrorism, and using the TTP as a rented force.&rdquo;&nbsp;Chishti also cited a 2016 statement attributed to India&rsquo;s current National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, in which he reportedly said India would use the Taliban &ldquo;the way we want,&rdquo; adding, &ldquo;They are mercenaries. India is a much bigger economy. We will inject more funds, and they will be on our side.&rdquo;&nbsp;He said the statement reflects India&rsquo;s long-standing intent to exploit instability in Afghanistan to its advantage.&nbsp;During the US presence in Afghanistan, Chishti noted, &ldquo;around 2,700 contractors were told to pay protection money to the Taliban&mdash;nearly $47 million per week&mdash;which shows how the group learned to monetize conflict and power.&rdquo;&nbsp;Terrorism data paints grim pictureAccording to data from the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), terrorist attacks in Pakistan surged from 89 in 2021 to 262 in 2022, 306 in 2023, and 521 in 2024. In the first 10 months of 2025 alone, 585 attacks have been recorded&mdash;the highest escalation in recent years.&nbsp;The situation worsened during Pakistan&rsquo;s brief conflict with India in May 2025, when a 40-member TTP group&mdash;including the son of a Taliban official&mdash;reportedly attempted to open a western front against Pakistan. Analysts say this highlights a dangerous convergence between anti-Pakistan groups operating from Afghan territory and external actors seeking to destabilize the region.&nbsp;The latest escalation came after the October 8 attacks in Orakzai and Dera Ismail Khan, which killed 18 security personnel. Pakistan&rsquo;s retaliatory strikes were followed by a terrorist assault on the DI Khan Police Training School by a group linked to the Taliban, killing seven policemen and injuring several others.&nbsp;According to the Islamabad-based Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), Pakistan witnessed a 46% rise in violence in the third quarter of 2025, with at least 901 fatalities and 599 injuries in 329 incidents of terrorism and counterterror operations.&nbsp;A looming questionChishti said the growing threat underscores the need for a &ldquo;clearer regional strategy.&rdquo;&nbsp;&ldquo;We must protect our borders and people,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But continued tolerance for terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan endangers not just Pakistan&rsquo;s security&mdash;it threatens regional peace and stability as a whole.&rdquo;&nbsp;As Pakistan re-evaluates its policy toward Kabul, one question looms large: Are the Afghan Taliban truly living up to India&rsquo;s expectations&mdash;or merely playing into a dangerous regional game that could consume them next?
