UN condemns child death toll from Israel's West Bank operations

Published: May 12, 2026 | 09:50 GMT | by AFP

The United Nations condemned on Tuesday the toll from "escalating" Israeli military operations and settler attacks in the occupied West Bank on children, with 70 Palestinian children killed since the start of 2025.

"Children are paying an intolerable price for escalating military operations and settler attacks across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem," UN children's agency spokesman James Elder told reporters.

Since the start of 2025, when Israel began a large-scale military operation in the West Bank, "at least one Palestinian child has been killed on average every single week" there, adding that another 850 children had been injured during that period.

"Most of those killed or wounded were done by live ammunition," he said.

Israeli forces were responsible for a full 93% of the deaths, Elder said, highlighting that the scaled-up military operations had come amid "historic levels of settler attacks".

Oil climbs but markets shrug off US-Iran deadlock

Published: May 12, 2026 | 07:08 GMT | by AFP

Oil prices climbed on Tuesday as US-Iran talks stalled, while markets were mixed as traders appeared to shrug off uncertainty over the 10-week-old war.

The impasse, which leaves the vital Strait of Hormuz mostly closed to oil tanker traffic, unnerved global energy markets.

The international benchmark Brent crude price jumped one percent to $105 a barrel during Tuesday morning trade in Asia, while benchmark US oil contract West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also rose one percent to $99 a barrel.

Precious metals also increased, with silver surging more than eight percent to $87 an ounce, capping weeks of rising prices.

But markets were mostly subdued, as analysts reported that traders are in wait-and-see mode as the 10-week war drags on.

UAE attacked Iran last month: WSJ

Published: May 12, 2026 | 02:00 GMT | by AFP

The United Arab Emirates carried out attacks on Iran early last month, sources told the Wall Street Journal, revealing previously unknown participation in the war by the Gulf country.

In an article on Monday, the American newspaper said the UAE's attacks targeted a refinery located on Iran's Lavan Island and took place "around the time" US President Donald Trump was "announcing a cease-fire in the war" after a five-week air strike campaign.

The US has quietly welcomed the Emirati strikes and any other Gulf states that want to join the fight, the paper reported, citing one unnamed source.

AFP has not been able to independently verify the reported Emirati attacks. The Journal did not specify a date or time.

However, the morning of April 8, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said: "missile and drone attacks on the Emirates and Kuwait have taken place a few hours after the targeting of Lavan island oil facilities in Iran."

Iran criticizes US-proposed UN Hormuz draft, warns of 'flawed' outcome

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi on Tuesday criticized reported US-led efforts to draft a UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Washington of trying to "shift the terms of the issue".

In a post on X, he said any proposal that ignored "aggression, siege, threats of force, and Iran’s legitimate rights" would be "flawed, biased, political, and doomed to failure".

He said "freedom of navigation" was a respected legal principle, but warned it could not be interpreted "selectively, politically, and detached from the United Nations Charter".

Trump warns US-Iran ceasefire on 'life support', Iran says ready for any aggression

Published: May 12, 2026 | 00:00 GMT | by AFP

President Donald Trump warned the ceasefire in the Middle East war was on "life support" after rejecting the latest counteroffer from Iran, which said its military stood ready to respond to any act of aggression.

After slamming the reply as "TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE," Trump insisted the United States would see a "complete victory" over Iran, adding that the truce which has largely halted fighting in the Gulf for over a month was on its last legs.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who served as chief negotiator in previous talks with Washington, said shortly afterwards that his country was prepared "for any eventuality."

"Our armed forces are ready to respond and to teach a lesson for any aggression," he wrote on X. "A bad strategy and bad decisions always lead to bad results -- the world already understands this."
