Liverpool silenced at Anfield as Maguire delivers the blow

ISLAMABAD: Anfield, usually the fortress of Liverpool’s pride, fell silent, as a late header from Manchester United’s Harry Maguire sealed a 2–1 win on Sunday night

This was the club’s first victory at Anfield in almost a decade, and Liverpool's fourth straight defeat this season.

The reaction online was instant, and brutal.

Football journalist Melissa Reddy captured the mood bluntly:

“Liverpool deserved to lose that. Having to throw the kitchen sink and hope something sticks — AGAIN — can’t be the plan. So much of the play is forced and out of desperation… So vulnerable defensively, and without a working mix in attack despite an abundance of talent.”

Her post racked up hundreds of thousands of views and set the tone for the evening: frustration, disbelief, and disappointment.

Another by @DanSLDNBG echoed the frustration felt by many fans:

“We literally outplayed 3 of our 4 opponents and we lost 4 times with goals in the last minutes of the game… What kind of game are you watching?”

Manchester United fans had a field day online.

User @itshelyz summed up the disbelief and delight in one viral post:

“Anfield: conquered. Manchester United: celebrating. The hero who broke the curse? Harry Maguire. If ‘Maguire scores the winner at Anfield’ was on your 2024 bingo card, you’re definitely cheating.”

It was the kind of post that captured the surreal nature of the moment — the much-mocked defender suddenly becoming the face of Manchester United’s redemption story.

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, is facing growing criticism.

Hashtags like #SlotOut trended within minutes, and posts questioned whether his system has stripped the team of its signature intensity.

@kingmordis summed up the frustration:

“Arne slot is everything rival fans say he is. I am not defending this man again.”

For supporters, it’s not just about tactics. It’s about identity.

The club that once thrived on emotion and unity now looks disconnected, and fans online are struggling to recognise the side they love.

Liverpool’s problem isn’t just losing matches, it’s losing momentum. Maguire’s header didn’t just win a game; it flipped the narrative. For United, it was redemption. For Liverpool, it was the sound of a storm brewing online.
