Pakistan's capital awaits US, Iran delegations for Islamabad Talks

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's capital is set to host delegations from Iran and the United States for Islamabad Talks after a ceasefire between the two countries was reached on Wednesday.

Iran's ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, had earlier said in a post on X on Thursday, "Despite skepticism of Iranian public opinion due to repeated ceasefire violations by Israeli regime to sabotage the diplomatic initiative, invited by Hon. PM Shehbaz Sharif, Iranian delegation arrives tonight in Islamabad for serious talks based on 10 points proposed by Iran." However, the post was later deleted.

Support for Pakistan diplomatic efforts

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his telephonic call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, expressed appreciation for Germany’s endorsement and support of Islamabad’s sincere diplomatic efforts that helped secure the Iran–U.S. ceasefire and pave the way for peace talks in Islamabad, the prime minister said on X.

PM Sharif stated that both sides agreed on the critical importance of upholding the ceasefire so that negotiations may lead to meaningful and lasting outcomes.

'Support for Pakistan efforts'

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker's “strong message” of endorsement and support for Pakistan’s efforts that have led to the US-Iran ceasefire, said the Prime Minister Office (PMO) in a statement.

In the telephonic conversation, both leaders stressed upon the importance of ensuring that the ceasefire be upheld by all sides, strengthening the prospects of successful negotiations that could bring lasting peace and stability to the region and beyond, said the statement.

‘Deep appreciation’

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, expressing “deep appreciation” for the restraint demonstrated by his leadership during the recent hostilities, the prime minister said on X.

“I am grateful for His Majesty’s kind words and support for Pakistan’s sincere efforts in facilitating the Iran–US ceasefire, which we hope will pave the way for lasting peace in the region,” he added.

He also offered condolences on the loss of lives and prayed for the “swift recovery” of the injured.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely for regional peace and stability.

Maintain peace and ceasefire

Pakistan Army Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reiterating the need to maintain peace and a ceasefire by all parties, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Both dignitaries reviewed the progress of Pakistan’s mediatory efforts to achieve sustainable peace in the region, the statement said.

“The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the de-escalation achieved so far and stressed the need for maintaining peace and a ceasefire by all parties,” the statement added.

The leadership appreciated the restraint demonstrated by all sides and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to facilitate and provide all-out support to help the parties reach a peacefully negotiated settlement.

Prime Minister Sharif lauded the commitment of all parties involved in the process and wished them “success in their pursuit of peace,” it added.

He also reviewed his invitation to the arriving delegations and assured them of Pakistan’s highest consideration and support, the statement said.

France congratulates Pakistan

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Pakistan on its "sincere efforts" in facilitating the ceasefire between Iran and the United States during his telephonic call with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In a post on his X, PM Sharif stated that the French president congratulated him for helping bring both sides to the negotiating table.

“I deeply appreciate his kind words as well as his good wishes for the success of the upcoming peace talks in Islamabad,” the prime minister stated.

He added that Pakistan will continue to work with its partners and friends, including France to ensure that this opportunity leads to a durable and lasting peace.

The prime minister also shared his “serious concern” over the ongoing aggression in Lebanon and underscored the urgent need to “end the violence and loss of innocent lives”, so that peace may be restored across the region.

Pakistan PM thanks world leaders 

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif in a series of posts on X on Thursday thanked world leaders for acknowledgment of Pakistan’s sincere efforts for peace.

Sharif thanked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomrat Tokyev, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Australian PM Anthony Albanese for their endorsement of Pakistan's sincere efforts for peace.

Pakistan, EU leaders express concern over ceasefire violations in Lebanon  

DPM/FM Senator Ishaq Dar spoke today (Thursday) with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs (EU HR/VP) Kaja Kallas, said a statement shared by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X on Thursday.

Both sides expressed concern over serious violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon and emphasized the importance of its full implementation of the temporary ceasefire in the Middle East. 

EU HR/VP reaffirmed EU’s support for Pakistan in its efforts to promote peace and stability.

Uzbek FM appreciates Pakistan's leadership 

DPM/FM Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke with Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East and the wider region, said a statement shared by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X on Thursday.

FM Saidov appreciated Pakistan’s leadership and conveyed Uzbekistan’s full support for all initiatives undertaken by Pakistan in pursuit of peace and stability, especially in securing the initial two-week ceasefire.

Both expressed hope that these continued efforts and engagements will foster lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.

Pakistan minister, US envoy finalize arrangements

Pakistan is gearing up for a significant round of diplomatic engagements as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker met in Islamabad on Thursday to review preparations for high-level talks scheduled to take place tomorrow (Friday), state-run APP reported.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Interior, the two sides held an extensive discussion on the evolving situation in the Middle East. 

They welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement, terming it a positive development for regional stability. 

'Sincere and constructive role'

Baker acknowledged Pakistan’s active diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, praising Islamabad’s “sincere and constructive role” in supporting peace initiatives.

A key focus of the meeting was the finalization of arrangements for Wednesday’s high-level talks, which are expected to draw significant international attention. 

Minister Naqvi briefed the US envoy on the comprehensive security and coordination plan devised to facilitate the visit of senior American officials.

He confirmed that US Vice President JD Vance, businessman Steve Witkoff, and senior advisor Jared Kushner will attend the discussions as special guests. 

Foolproof security 

Naqvi assured that foolproof security measures are in place to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of all meetings and movements.

The meeting underscored the continuing cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, particularly in areas of regional security and diplomatic coordination. 

Both sides expressed optimism that the upcoming engagements in Islamabad would help strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to broader regional stability.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia stress for full implementation of ceasefire

Earlier on Thursday, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia's foreign ministers stressed the "urgent need" for the full implementation of the US-Iran ceasefire to ensure lasting peace and stability.  

Pakistan's DPM/FM, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, spoke late last night with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the latest regional developments, a post on X by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

Both expressed deep concern over ceasefire violations in Lebanon and stressed the urgent need for full respect and implementation of the ceasefire to ensure lasting peace and stability, the post said.

The DPM/FM appreciated Saudi Arabia’s continued support for Pakistan’s efforts toward achieving lasting peace. 

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact, it said.

Spanish FM commends Pakistan's role in creating space for diplomacy 

Pakistan's DPM/FM Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke tonight with José Manuel Albares, Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, on the latest regional developments, said a post on X by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

The DPM/FM underscored Pakistan’s sustained efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy for lasting peace.

FM Albares commended Pakistan’s role in creating space for diplomacy, including efforts toward an initial ceasefire, and conveyed Spain’s full support for these efforts.

Kuwait FM welcomes initial ceasefire 

DPM/FM Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke with Jarrah Jaber Al‑Ahmad Al‑Sabah, Foreign Minister of Kuwait, on regional developments and Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.

The DPM/FM underscored Pakistan’s commitment to furthering diplomatic efforts toward lasting peace, said a statement shared by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X on Wednesday. 

FM Al‑Sabah welcomed the initial ceasefire, appreciated Pakistan’s efforts, and extended full support to Pakistan in this endeavor.

Both ministers expressed concern over ongoing ceasefire violations, including incidents affecting Kuwait and particularly serious breaches in Lebanon, stressing the importance of full respect for the ceasefire to ensure stability and enduring peace.

Fragile ceasefire 

A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran entered its second day on Thursday, as Pakistan prepared to host high-stakes negotiations in Islamabad even as Israeli strikes in Lebanon intensified, killing over 250.

The two-week ceasefire, brokered through Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, has shifted focus toward the upcoming “Islamabad Talks,” where delegations from Washington and Tehran are expected to pursue a broader agreement aimed at ending the conflict.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged restraint as tensions persisted on the ground.

Historic peace talks 

“I earnestly and sincerely urge all parties to exercise restraint and respect the ceasefire for two weeks… so that diplomacy can take a lead role,” he said in a post on X.

Despite the truce, violence continued to flare across the region.

In Lebanon, Israeli strikes killed more than 250 people and wounded over 1,000, according to local authorities, marking one of the deadliest days since the conflict expanded.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam declared a national day of mourning, condemning attacks on “hundreds of innocent, defenseless civilians.”

“The United Nations strongly condemns the strikes by Israel across Lebanon that resulted in significant civilian casualties,” said UN spokesman Farhan Haq.

Pakistanis hail Iran-US mediation 

The developments come as Washington maintains that operations in Lebanon fall outside the scope of the ceasefire.

US Vice President JD Vance, who is set to lead the American delegation to Islamabad on Saturday, said: “If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart… over Lebanon… that’s ultimately their choice.”

Tehran, however, has indicated that continued strikes risk undermining the broader diplomatic process, highlighting the fragile balance between ongoing hostilities and emerging negotiations.

The White House has confirmed that a US delegation led by Vance will travel to Islamabad for the first round of talks, alongside senior officials, while Iran has also agreed to send a negotiating team.

Pakistan has intensified diplomatic outreach ahead of the talks, positioning Islamabad as a central venue for efforts to convert the ceasefire into a lasting peace framework.

Sharif said he had received support from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

“We shall continue to work tirelessly with our friends and partners… in our common quest for securing lasting peace in the region,” he said.

International leaders have also backed the ceasefire, while warning of risks to its sustainability.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the decision as “the best possible one,” stressing that it must lead to “comprehensive negotiations” for lasting peace.
